POSITION OVERVIEW:
Are you passionate about trees, technical fieldwork, and helping protect and preserve the natural environment in your community? The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Urban Forestry Technician to support the implementation and enforcement of the City’s Tree Protection and Management Bylaw.
In this hands-on role, you will conduct tree inspections, review arborist reports and permit applications, and provide recommendations on tree removal, protection, and planting plans. You’ll be a key player in supporting the City’s tree management strategies—ensuring a healthy, resilient urban canopy and enhancing the livability of our growing city.
This position offers the opportunity to combine fieldwork with technical review and customer interaction, contributing to both the environmental and regulatory goals of the municipality.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Graduation from a two-year diploma program in arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or a related field.
• Sound related experience in urban forestry, preferably in a municipal setting.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATIONS
• ISA Certified Arborist designation
• ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct on-site tree inspections to assess tree health, species, size, and associated risks.
• Review arborist reports and tree risk assessments for accuracy and alignment with the Tree Protection and Management Bylaw.
• Assess and provide recommendations on tree permit applications for development and non-development sites.
• Investigate tree-related complaints and violations, provide guidance on arboricultural best practices, and recommend enforcement action when necessary.
• Verify suitability of replacement and street trees for replanting requirements.
• Prepare detailed reports, correspondence, and records regarding permit decisions, inspections, and bylaw compliance.
• Communicate with residents, developers, and internal departments to provide technical information and clarify tree-related regulations and procedures.
