POSITION OVERVIEW:
The City of Maple Ridge is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Court Liaison Officer to support the efficient processing of criminal cases within the RCMP detachment. This specialized role requires strong knowledge of court procedures, evidential standards, and criminal justice processes to ensure prosecution reports are accurate, complete, and compliant with legal requirements.
The Court Liaison Officer acts as a critical link between investigating officers, Crown Counsel, and court agencies to facilitate effective case management. This role exercises considerable independent judgment while working within departmental policies, legal frameworks, and court practices. Performance is evaluated based on the effectiveness, accuracy, and timeliness of services provided to support the criminal justice system.
In This Role You Will:
Liaise with Federal and Provincial Crown Counsel, justice departments, court registry staff, law enforcement agencies, and detachment personnel regarding criminal case management
Review investigative reports for clarity, completeness, and evidential sufficiency; return deficient reports for correction; approve and forward prosecution materials to Crown Counsel
Coordinate requests from Crown Counsel for additional information and ensure prompt communication with investigating officers
Provide guidance to members on case documentation, evidential standards, and relevant legal or policy updates
Monitor court schedules to ensure officer attendance; resolve scheduling conflicts and communicate court requirements
Notify Crown Counsel of pending or approved charges and follow up on dismissed cases when appropriate
Ensure compliance with procedures related to fingerprinting, prisoner escorts, and court attendance
Manage warrants, exhibit returns, and CPIC entries in accordance with legal and departmental requirements
Swear information before a Justice of the Peace as required
Observe officer testimony in court and report performance feedback to leadership
Perform related duties supporting the efficient operation of court and case management processes
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduation. Considerable experience in criminal investigation work and in court procedures; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of law enforcement practices and of the departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to the work.
Thorough knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada and applicable Federal and Provincial statues and Municipal bylaws.
Considerable knowledge of investigation procedures and evidential requirements to prove a charge.
Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
Ability to read and assess reports for clarity and completeness and to ensure that all proper investigation procedures and evidential requirements are met.
Ability to ensure that investigating officers respond promptly to requests from Crown Counsel for additional information.
Ability to provide direction to members regarding proper documentation, pertinent case law interpretation and policy directives, and to assess and report on members' performance in court.
Ability to resolve court scheduling conflicts.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively orally and in writing.
Licenses, Certificates and Registrations
Class 5 Driver’s Licence valid in the Province of British Columbia
Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance.

This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours.
