POSITION OVERVIEW

The City of Maple Ridge is looking for passionate and dedicated Auxiliary Lifeguard/Instructors to join our team and help foster a fun and safe environment at our indoor and outdoor aquatic recreation facilities. In this role, you'll provide exceptional lifeguarding and instructional services to individuals of all ages and skill levels, ensuring their safety and enjoyment in the water. With a solid understanding of water safety and a strong sense of responsibility, you'll proactively maintain safety standards while engaging with guests in a professional, approachable manner.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 and volunteer aquatic experience in a municipal recreation program; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  
Must be at least 16 years old at the time of the application.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•    Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and delivery of effective lifeguarding, lifesaving, swim instruction, resuscitation and first aid.
•    Working knowledge of effective aquatic teaching methods and group leadership techniques.
•    Working knowledge of pool operations and pool chemistry testing techniques including pool water filtration, chlorination, heating and pool chemistry with an ability to inform maintenance and guests.  
•    Ability to display sound aquatic and rescue skills and to perform these skills at the standards set by certifying agencies and to standards of relevant authorities.
•    Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external contacts and groups, volunteers, program participants and members of the public.
•    Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public and user groups.
•    Ability to display sound judgement and decision making and to adapt to a variety of circumstances.
•    Ability to perform duties for extended periods of time.
•    Ability to use a variety of materials and equipment for pool maintenance and facility cleanliness purposes.
•    Ability to act for a superior for short absences and with defined limits.
•    Ability to work in a humid environment and under varying weather conditions.
•    Ability to prepare and maintain records related to the work. 
 
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES
•    Lifesaving Society - National Lifeguard (Pool Option).
•    Lifesaving Society – Swim Instructor (SI).
•    Standard First Aid (SFA) with CPR Level C/Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
 
HOURS OF WORK:
This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing regular schedule of hours. Please note that hours and shifts are based on operational requirements.
 
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Qualified candidates will be assessed continuously throughout the posting period. Mandatory wet screening will be conducted on the following dates:
•    Friday, October 3, 2025 (5PM – 8PM); or
•    Friday, October 17, 2025 (5PM – 8PM)

A Police Information Check will be required as a condition of employment for successful candidates. (Note: This is not required as part of the application process but will be needed upon consideration for employment.)
