POSITION OVERVIEW

The Custodial Guard 2, working within the Ridge-Meadows RCMP Detachment is responsible for the care and control of prisoner’s security and welfare.  You will be responsible for searching the cell prior to prisoner lodging and after release, prepare meals, track supply inventory and maintain cell block cleanliness through duties which include sweeping, mopping, wiping, hosing etc.  Guards utilize police computer systems for the booking of prisoners, maintain the Prisoner Logbook and prisoner effects record.  Guards also work closely with Police Officers and must adhere to RCMP processes, policy, and safety procedures.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the tenth school grade, some experience in custodial, detention or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Sound knowledge of the policies and practices, methods and procedures involved in the control, custody, welfare and escorting of prisoners.
Ability to understand the needs and attitudes of prisoners and to deal with same in a firm, discreet and compassionate manner.
Ability and willingness to deal with prisoners who may be intoxicated and in unclean physical condition and to perform body searches as required.
Ability to maintain mental alertness, to act quickly, correctly, and calmly in emergency situations and to exercise moderate physical strength and agility as the circumstances warrant.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.

 

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATE
Designated St. John Ambulance valid First-Aid Certificate and certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation or equivalent.
Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance.
As per the Collective Agreement Note F All Custodial Guards work twelve (12) consecutive hours on shift with no breaks. Applicable overtime rates are paid after an employee has worked twelve (12) consecutive hours. For the purposes of the application of overtime on “Saturday and Sunday”, Custodial Guards are recognized as working a Non-Standard Work Week in Article 13.03 of the Collective Agreement.


HOURS OF WORK
As per the Letter of Understanding (LOU) for shift schedule for Custodial Guards the following will apply:


Shift Structure: 
Employees classified in the above positions will work twelve (12) consecutive hours on a 4x4 (12) hour 
shift schedule, starting between the hours of 06:00 to 18:00 for dayshift and 18:00 to 06:00 for night 
shift. The shift schedule is designed to follow Detachment’s Watch Schedule and may be subject to 
change in accordance with the provisions set out below. 
The Employer shall provide ninety-six (96) hours’ notice prior to changing an employee’s workdays or 
shift rotation as set out herein. Should appropriate notice not be given, then overtime provisions of 
Article 15.01 shall apply.
