POSITION OVERVIEW:

Are you a certified instructor in specialty fitness areas like Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Pre/Post Natal, or Group Cycle? We’re looking for passionate and engaging Specialty Fitness Instructors to bring their unique skills to our fitness community!

As a Specialty Fitness Instructor, you’ll inspire participants through well-designed, safe, and effective classes tailored to different fitness levels and ages. With your excellent communication and people skills, you’ll help create a welcoming, motivating atmosphere that keeps participants coming back for more.

What You’ll Do:
Lead Specialized Classes: Design and lead specialty classes (e.g., Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Pre/Post Natal, Group Cycle) that are accessible, engaging, and adaptable for participants at various fitness levels.
Prioritize Safety: Ensure a safe environment in the fitness areas by demonstrating proper form, techniques, and modifications with clear and precise instruction.
Create a Supportive Community: Foster a welcoming and encouraging environment that helps participants feel empowered in their wellness journeys.
Bring Positive Energy: Enthusiastically engage participants and create memorable class experiences tailored to their needs and goals.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Certified instructors in specialty areas such as Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Pre/Post Natal, or Group Cycle
  • Team players with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about health, wellness, and specialty fitness areas
  • Confident in demonstrating exercises and offering modifications for a variety of fitness levels

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Recognized fitness certificate approved by a creditor plus recent related experience, including working with specialty fitness classes in a fitness facility, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Sound knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, standards, safety regulations and rules governing the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of current techniques and the principals of anatomy and physiology as it applies to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of current industry standards and methods of practice as it applies to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of various fitness programs, equipment and group dynamics.
  • Ability to plan, develop, design and instruct specialty fitness exercise classes to assist participants of varying levels and ages in reaching their health and fitness goals
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and deal tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of participants.
  • Ability to provide, select and utilize music appropriately to enhance class. 
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of equipment used in fitness facilities.

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR ‘A’ certification.
  • Current BCRPA Fitness Certification registered as a fitness leader in specialty fitness such as BCRPA Group, or BCRPA Aquatic Fitness, or equivalent; and/orBCRPA Specialty Certification such as BCRPA Pilates, BCRPA Yoga Fitness, Barre, Older Adult, Group Cycle Certificate, Pre and/or Post Natal Certificate, or equivalent; and/or Specialty Certification such as Pilates, Yoga Certification.

HOURS OF WORK

This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing regular schedule of hours. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

As per the Letter of Understanding (LOU) for Group and Specialty Fitness Instructor, the terms and conditions of employment as outlined in the Collective Agreement will apply to the following classifications with the exemption of the Articles varied under the Letter of Understanding.

  • Group Fitness Instructor
  • Specialty Fitness Instructor I
  • Specialty Fitness Instructor 2

Article 13 - Hours of Work
Recreation facilities operate seven (7) days per week. Hours of work will vary, and Employees will be scheduled according to program operational requirements. The Parties agree that, due to the nature of the programs, schedules are subject to cancellation or modification. The hours of work outlined herein are based on operational requirements and may be modified from time to time in accordance with Article 5.01 of the Collective Agreement; Employees may work any and all days of the week in accordance with the provisions in Schedule B, notes C & Q. Split Shifts are permitted.If an Instructor is unable to attend a scheduled class (for example due to sickness, injury, family illness etc.) the City shall be responsible for finding coverage for the class as per normal practice. This does not preclude reasonable and voluntary shift coverage arrangements between the City and Instructors.

Article 15 - Overtime
Overtime rates will apply to all hours worked in excess of an average of forty (40) hours per week in a two-week period or eight 8) hours in a day. It is expressly stated that the eight (8) hours in a day, need not be consecutive but must be completed within twelve (12) hours from the start of the shift. Overtime pay shall be paid for all hours worked in excess of eight (8) hours within the twelve (12) hour period from the start of the shift.

Article 22 – Payment of Wages and Allowances
Dependent on registration, employees working in these classifications shall be a minimum of one (1) hour to a maximum of eight (8) hours in a day. Wherever practicable, the Employer will endeavor to provide employees working in these classifications with a minimum of two (2) consecutive hours of work. Employees working in these classifications will be paid an additional fifteen (15) minutes for each class instructed for program set up, take down, and customer service.

Article 22.08 Fees and Licenses
Employees in these classifications are solely responsible for the fees associated with the holding of specialized certifications (i.e. Zumba). The City will pay for recertification fees for BCRPA fitness certification (or equivalent) once an employee has passed their probationary period.
