POSITION OVERVIEW

If you are passionate about working with children in a fun, safe, active, and inclusive environment then this front-line, hands-on leadership position is for you! In this role you will provide leadership to a team of junior staff and oversee the safety of groups of children between the ages of 0-12 years in recreation programs. You will assist in program planning activities and themed programs, as well as encourage participation in recreation delivered by you and your team in indoor and outdoor environments. This position may include opportunities to support individual children with additional support needs to participate in recreational activities. This support role may require providing personal care to children or adapting programs to encourage participation.

The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and will exercise judgement within established policies and procedures. They will be able to communicate effectively to the teams, parents and members of the public they are engaging with. They will have experience leading teams working with children in activities such as: out trips, daily camp programs, and themes activities and events. They will have experience maintaining program forms, waivers, daily logs and first aid reports and maintain organized files. They will be able to ensure supervisors and teams are well informed of daily activities and happenings.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work, plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and instruction for preschool, children, youth and adults.
  • Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work and of modern office methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and instruction for clients with varying abilities.
  • Ability to participate in planning and implementing programs and activities and to provide leadership and instruction on same.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with program participants, parents and external agencies.
  • Ability to assist in the leadership of volunteers and junior-level staff.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment used in the work.

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

Standard First Aid and CPR – Level C.

HOURS OF WORK

  • The working hours for this position adhere to Schedule B (C, J) of the Collective Agreement, as well as the guidelines outlined in the Letter of Understanding for Workers in Children's/Youth Services and Recreation Access. It's important to note that this is an Auxiliary position, and as such, it does not have a predefined, ongoing schedule of hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Food Safe Certificate
  • 20 hours of Responsible Adult Training for working with children
  • High Five Training – Principals of Healthy Child Development
  • Physical Literacy Training in Fundamental Movement Skills
  • Anaphylaxis Epi Pen Training
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or MANDT training
  • Additional training, education or experience related to working with children
