POSITION OVERVIEW

We’re currently seeking a Specialty Fitness Instructor with a focus on Pilates to support growing program demand. Are you passionate about fitness and love inspiring others to move, sweat, and feel their best? In this role, you’ll design and deliver dynamic group fitness experiences, demonstrate proper form, and provide modifications so everyone feels supported, challenged, and successful.


You’ll create a safe, inclusive, and motivating environment by adapting to individual needs and ensuring participant and facility safety at all times. While working within established guidelines, you’ll bring your own creativity and initiative to each class, with support from a supervisor when needed.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Primarily design and lead Pilates-based fitness classes (with opportunities to support other formats such as Yoga, Barre, or Cycle if certifications allow) for participants of all ages and fitness levels
  • Deliver clear instruction, demonstrate proper form and technique, and provide modifications to support different abilities and improve performance
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and motivating class environment while actively supervising participants
  • Conduct participant screening (e.g., PAR-Q) and respond to questions, concerns, and individual needs
  • Set up and inspect equipment before use, ensuring the fitness space is safe, organized, and ready for class
  • Monitor and maintain facility and equipment safety, reporting any issues or malfunctions promptly
  • Reinforce facility guidelines, including equipment use and overall conduct
  • Perform basic cleaning duties and ensure all equipment is properly maintained, stored, and secured after use

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Certified instructor in Pilates or a related specialty fitness discipline, with a strong background in Pilates preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a positive, team-focused approach.
  • Confident demonstrating exercises and offering modifications for a variety of abilities and fitness levels.
  • Enthusiastic, approachable, and committed to delivering safe, fun, and effective classes.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Recognized fitness certificate approved by a accreditor plus recent related experience, including working with specialty fitness classes in a fitness facility; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Teaching experience in Pilates.

 

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR ‘A’ certification.
  • BCRPA Specialty Certification (e.g., BCRPA Pilates, BCRPA Yoga Fitness, Barre, etc.), with Pilates certification strongly preferred; and/or
  • Current BCRPA Fitness Certification registered as a fitness leader in specialty fitness such as BCRPA Group, or BCRPA Aquatic Fitness, or equivalent; and/or
  • Specialty Certification such as Pilates, Yoga Certification.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Sound knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, standards, safety regulations and rules governing the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of current techniques and the principals of anatomy and physiology as it applies to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of current industry standards and methods of practice as it applies to the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of various fitness programs, equipment and group dynamics.
  • Ability to plan, develop, design and instruct specialty fitness exercise classes to assist participants of varying levels and ages in reaching their health and fitness goals
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and deal tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of participants.
  • Ability to provide, select and utilize music appropriately to enhance class.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of equipment used in fitness facilities.

 

HOURS OF WORK
This is an auxiliary position with no ongoing regular schedule of hours. 

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The terms and conditions of employment as outlined in the Collective Agreement will apply to the following classifications with the exemption of the Articles varied under this Letter of Understanding.

Article 13 - Hours of Work
Recreation facilities operate seven (7) days per week. Hours of work will vary, and Employees will be scheduled according to program operational requirements.

The Parties agree that due to the nature of the programs, schedules are subject to cancellation or modification. The hours of work outlined herein are based on operational requirements and may be modified from time to time in accordance with Article 5.01 of the Collective Agreement. Employees may work any and all days of the week in accordance with the provisions in Schedule B, notes C & Q. Split Shifts are permitted.

If an instructor is unable to attend a scheduled class (for example due to sickness, injury, family illness etc.) the City shall be responsible for finding coverage for the class as per normal practice. This does not preclude reasonable and voluntary shift coverage arrangements between the City and Instructors.

 

Article 15 - Overtime
Overtime rates will apply to all hours worked in excess of an average of forty (40) hours per week in a two-week period or eight 8) hours in a day. It is expressly stated that the eight (8) hours in a day, need not be consecutive but must be completed within twelve (12) hours from the start of the shift. Overtime pay shall be paid for all hours worked in excess of eight (8) hours within the twelve (12) hour period from the start of the shift.

 

Article 22 – Payment of Wages and Allowances
Dependent on registration, employees working in these classifications shall be a minimum of one (1) hour to a maximum of eight (8) hours in a day. Wherever practicable, the Employer will endeavor to provide employees working in these classifications with a minimum of two (2) consecutive hours of work.

Employees working in these classifications will be paid an additional fifteen (15) minutes for each class instructed for program set up, take down, and customer service.

 

Article 22.08 Fees and Licenses
Employees in these classifications are solely responsible for the fees associated with the holding of specialized certifications (i.e. Zumba). The City will pay for recertification fees for BCRPA fitness certification (or equivalent) once an employee has passed their probationary period.
