POSITION OVERVIEW:

Do you have a passion for trees, sustainability, and creating greener communities? The City of Maple Ridge is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Urban Forestry Coordinator to support the implementation of the City’s Urban Forest Management Strategy and Tree Protection and Management Bylaw.

In this dynamic and community-facing role, you will coordinate a range of urban forestry initiatives, review and help shape policy, support permitting processes, and lead stewardship programs that protect and enhance our urban tree canopy. You will work closely with internal departments, contractors, community groups, and external partners to advance our long-term vision for a resilient and thriving urban forest.

This position is ideal for someone with technical expertise in arboriculture or urban forestry, strong communication and public engagement skills, and a desire to make a lasting environmental impact in a growing municipality.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduation from a diploma program in arboriculture; university-level degree in Urban Forestry, Forestry, or Landscape Architecture is preferred.
• Considerable related experience, ideally in a municipal urban forestry setting.
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

 

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATIONS

· Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)

· ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)

· Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Strong knowledge of urban forestry practices, tree biology, pests, diseases, and treatment techniques.

· Familiarity with municipal bylaws, tree permitting processes, and tree risk assessment methodologies.

· Ability to research and analyze data, draft reports, and recommend policy improvements.

· Skilled in preparing technical documents and reviewing consultant deliverables.

· Excellent communication and public engagement skills, with experience facilitating workshops or community meetings.

· Ability to develop educational materials and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.

· Proficiency in both written and visual communication, including graphic presentation.
