POSITION OVERVIEW:
The City of Maple Ridge is seeking an experienced and collaborative Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to lead the daily operation of our Preventive Maintenance Facility and support the safe, reliable, and cost-effective maintenance of municipal fleet assets.
This is skilled supervisory trades work involving the planning, assignment, coordination, supervision, and, where required, participation in the servicing, repair, inspection, and maintenance of a diverse fleet of automotive, commercial, heavy-duty, fire, and emergency response vehicles and equipment. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in scheduling and coordinating work, supervising staff, and ensuring that maintenance practices meet operational, regulatory, quality, and safety standards.
The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor reports more complex operational issues and policy matters to a superior, who evaluates performance based on the effective delivery of trades supervisory services.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:
Plan, assign, schedule, coordinate, and supervise the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled staff engaged in fleet servicing, repair, inspection, and maintenance.
Participate in hands-on repair and maintenance work as operationally required.
Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Preventive Maintenance Facility for municipal fleet assets, including fire apparatus and emergency vehicles.
Ensure fleet maintenance activities are completed in accordance with applicable safety, quality, inspection, and operational standards.
Coordinate and oversee Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement inspection and compliance processes.
Diagnose mechanical issues and equipment malfunctions, and verify that work performed meets required instructions, specifications, standards, and safety requirements.
Prepare and maintain operational records, including vehicle damage reports, insurance documentation, maintenance records, and related reports.
Requisition materials, parts, and shop stock, and ensure the maintenance of shop tools, equipment, and facilities.
Review specifications for new vehicles and equipment builds to support operational suitability, standardization, maintainability, lifecycle performance, and regulatory compliance.
Assist in developing and implementing improved work methods, maintenance practices, and supervisory techniques.
Allocate work, provide direction, support employee development, and address performance and conduct issues as required.
Assist with and contribute to employee performance evaluations for staff within the work unit.
Control and maintain a small automotive stores section.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety practices peculiar to the trade and of the functions of the Garage and of the requirements of those served by it.
Considerable knowledge of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement processes, inspection requirements, and related compliance practices applicable to municipal fleet operations.
Sound knowledge of preventive maintenance principles and practices related to the operation of a preventive maintenance facility.
Sound knowledge of fleet specification development and review processes for new vehicle and equipment builds.
Sound knowledge of maintenance practices, standards, and repair considerations for Fire apparatus and emergency response vehicles.
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of insurance claim processes, vehicle damage reporting, repair coordination, and municipal fleet administration.
Ability to plan, lay-out, supervise, and participate in the work of a number of subordinates with economy and efficiency in the use of time, equipment and materials.
Ability to prepare reports and records, order parts and material and estimate time and material requirements.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work sketches.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with subordinates and other employees.
Skill in the care and use of tools, machinery and equipment used in the work supervised.
DESIREABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade 12 and completion of a recognized Mechanic trade apprenticeship, plus considerable experience in the mechanical trade in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES
Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia - Class 3 with Air Brake Certification.
B.C. Certificate of Qualification – Red Seal (Heavy Duty, Truck and Transport or Automotive).
Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification.
HOURS OF WORK:
Current hours of work are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
As per the Collective Agreement the hours of work for the position can be as outlined in Schedule B Note N
